Groppello di Revò
Il vitigno autoctono che racconta la Val di Non
Groppello di Revò: the native grape that tells the story of Val di Non
The Groppello di Revò is a rare native grape variety from Trentino, cultivated for centuries in the Terza Sponda area of the Val di Non, between the villages of Revò, Romallo, Cloz, and Cagnò. This ancient and precious grape, distinct from the better-known Groppello varieties of Lake Garda, has a unique identity shaped by the valley’s climate and the longstanding traditions of local winegrowers.
Ancient origins and a modern rediscovery
Documented as far back as the 16th century, this grape variety was once one of the agricultural symbols of the valley. With the rise of intensive apple cultivation, however, Groppello di Revò risked disappearing entirely. Thanks to the dedication of a few committed producers, it has been rescued and revived as a shining example of Trentino’s viticultural biodiversity.
Wine characteristics: intense aromas and a bold personality
Wines made from Groppello di Revò stand out for their ruby-red color with violet hues and an aromatic bouquet recalling woodland scents, wild berries, and refined notes of Alpine herbs.
On the palate, the wine is structured, with firm yet elegant tannins, refreshing acidity, and an overall balanced profile. In its younger versions, it expresses vibrancy and immediacy; with ageing, it develops more complex and mature aromas while retaining its unmistakable territorial character.
Food pairings
Groppello di Revò pairs perfectly with:
-
local cured meats
-
aged Trentino cheeses
-
grilled meats and traditional Alpine dishes
-
hearty soups and rustic preparations
-
tortèl di patate
Its versatility makes it an excellent choice both for everyday meals and for tastings focused on native grape varieties.
Beyond wine: Groppello grappa
The pomace of this grape also gives life to an intense, aromatic grappa, featuring a clean taste and a soft, lingering finish. It is a distillate that fully reflects the quality of its raw material and represents one of the most authentic expressions of Alpine culture.
A heritage worth preserving
Groppello di Revò is more than a wine — it is a fundamental part of the agricultural heritage of Val di Non. The effort to protect and promote it is a concrete commitment to safeguarding Trentino’s rare grape varieties and an invitation to discover flavors deeply rooted in the land and in the work of those who cultivate it.
