AMARONE AND TRENTODOC: WINE EXCELLENCE OF LAND, METHOD AND STYLE
From Veneto to Trentino, from Amarone to Trentodoc, from the intensity of a red wine that marked the history of Valpolicella to the elegance of mountain bubbles, a classic method so distinctive of Trentino wine production, for a historical, natural and artistic journey to the discovery of the excellence of two regions that embody national oenology.
Day 1 | Amarone, the illustrious red wine of Verona
The day begins a few kilometres north of Verona, surrounded by the hilly landscape of the Valpolicella designation, cradle of the renowned Amarone DOCG, a land rich in enogastronomic excellence and with a strong cultural footprint. The visit begins in an Amarone winery, in the eastern portion of the territory of the Valpolicella designation, followed by a stop at the Wine Museum, showcasing agricultural and oenological work from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century. A special tasting of Amarone will conclude the historical-cultural experience of the morning.
Next up, lunch in a typical restaurant in eastern Valpolicella, whose pristine hilly landscape engenders unique feelings. The afternoon will be dedicated to the discovery of green gold, namely, DOP Veneto Valpolicella extra virgin olive oil, with a visit to an olive mill to discover oil processing techniques. The day will end with dinner in a restaurant with typical dishes of Veronese culture. To end the day with a bang, we spend the night in one of the beautiful facilities immersed in the wonderful hills of eastern Valpolicella, in the name of relaxation and wellness.
Day 2 | Amarone: special grape drying techniques, famous Ripasso wine
On Day 2, our tour continues moving from the designation’s eastern zone, leaving behind us the wonderful hills of Cazzano di Tramigna, Illasi, Colognola ai Colli, Illasi and the entire Valpantena, crossing San Martino Buonalbergo and arriving in a wonderful art city listed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List: Verona. Walk to the discovery of the historical centre, known throughout the world thanks to the Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and the majestic Arena. The tour will involve the most important historic-artistic-cultural points of the city.
After lunch in a restaurant on the road leading to the Classic and Historic zone of Valpolicella, we head northwest, to reach the five communes that define the real Valpolicella or Val ... Polis ... Cellae: valley of many wineries. Fumane, Marano di Valpolicella, Negrar, San Pietro in Cariano and Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella make up the Classic zone, where we will spend our afternoon visiting a winery to discover, through the passionate narration of producers, the production techniques of Amarone, including the special drying technique which allows the production of Valpolicella Ripasso, and appreciate the wine’s special properties through a series of guided tasting sessions. The day will end with dinner in an inn or restaurant with typical dishes of the Veronese culture, featuring the most ancient local recipes. To end the day with a bang, we spend the night in one of the beautiful facilities immersed in the wonderful Valpolicella hills.
Day 3 | Trentodoc: mountain bubbles
Our itinerary continues westward, along the morainic hills leading to Lake Garda. The landscape is typically Mediterranean, and, as we return to Trentino, the trendy, truncated lines yield to imposing rocky walls plunging into the deep lake. As soon as we cross the regional border, we make our first stop at a winery to cheer, lake in sight, at our first meeting with mountain bubbles. Here, we will learn about the production method and, more in depth, the special processing techniques that make Trentodoc a true wine excellence.
We continue with a stop in Valle dei Laghi to enjoy lunch based on typical local produce, against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Toblino, then head for the hilly area of Trento to visit another Trentodoc producer, where you will deepen our knowledge of this wine’s production area. In the afternoon, we visit the historical centre of Trento, the well-known city of the Council, with an itinerary through the city's historical and artistic symbols: from the Castle of Buonconsiglio to Piazza Duomo, up to the innovative MUSE, the Museum of Natural Sciences designed by Renzo Piano, along a trail that will make wine its unchallenged protagonist. After completing the tour, we enjoy a unique aperitif in “pure Trentino style” in the prestigious rooms of Palazzo Roccabruna, the provincial Trentino wine house. Finally, we will have dinnerwith typical local products and overnight stay in the city.
Day 4 | Trentodoc: method and local excellence
For our last day dedicated to the Trentodoc spumante houses, we will head north, up to the wonderful expanses of Piana Rotaliana, at the foot of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our day begins at the “Museum of Customs and Traditions of the People of Trentino”, the largest Italian regional museum devoted to folk traditions, including agriculture, crafts, religiosity, music and folklore, to enjoy full circle the culture of people who daily inhabit and shape these lands. The itinerary continues with a new visit to a winery, paired with a cool aperitif in the green of the manicured countryside to retrace, accompanied by a plesant narration, the historical evolution of the famous mountain bubbles. At lunch time, we will enjoy typical local products paired with an intriguing selection of Trentodoc wines.
From here, we traverse the charming provincial Wine Route to reach the hinterland of Val di Cembra, a succession of rough terraces that draw a geometric and orderly landscape. It is the result of a hard work that, with a simple glance, tells the story of the passion and respect of generations of mountain peasants. A special setting that is home to one of the tallest wineries in Europe, to visit in order to complete our journey with the memory of a fine perlage: Trentodoc rosé. Back to the valley, we proceed along the main road to the south, beyond the city of Trento, to arrive in Vallagarina, an area historically dedicated to the production of fine wines, a land of vines, castles and ancient palaces; this is our last tour stop. After visiting a Vallagarina winery, greeted by a family of local producers, we make room for an exceptional tasting of reserve bubbles.
